Finding Curious Things with Sinéid Codd

  • Hastings Museum John's Place, Bohemia Rd Hastings TN34 1ET United Kingdom (map)

Broken things, odd items, strange finds… There are lots of found objects, all around us, to be curious about.
We will be making collaborative paper sculptures from observational drawings of your chosen found object, drawn using vivid colours and invented patterns.

In this workshop for familes and kids (7-12) we will discuss why found objects can be so fascinating, and we will observe the objects in depth – talking about them…thinking about transformation – how they connect with other things.

Working in small groups, we will carry out paper cutting experiments, referencing Matisse paper cuts, and create quick observational drawings of objects onto coloured paper.

Participants will:

  • make up to 4 line drawings of found objects onto coloured paper

  • cut out the drawings

  • invent coloured patterns

  • ‘build’ the cut outs, from 2d to 3D forms

  • work together to build a collaborative installation

  • photograph their work

As an artist educator, Sinéid Codd is currently working with Towner Gallery, De La Warr Pavilion and Design Museum.
Previous freelance projects include: working with Hastings Contemporary, Drawing Life, Hastings Museum & Art Gallery, Tate Modern, British Library, Chisenhale Gallery, British Museum, Museum of the Home, National Maritime Museum, South London Gallery.

Tickets: £12 , or £8 low income

Sinéid is drawn to the transitory relationship with the edges of land, and she derives her work from found objects that connect her with themes of loss, longing and hope – in part, acts of transformative repair.

Curiosity, play and experimentation drive her practice, encompassing sculpture, collected objects, photography and painting, often brought together in site-responsive installations that invite inquisitiveness. Aligned with her involvement as a socially engaged practitioner, she looks to embrace a multitude of interpretations in her work.
