Tristan Lathey

I’m a Hastings based ceramicist whose main focus has always been animals.

I’ve been making for over 10 years and have been lucky enough be involved with many exciting projects and exhibitions. Highlights include a commission by the University of York to make a giant parasite, painting a giant dog sculpture for charity in Newcastle upon Tyne, and a solo show called ‘Snakes in a Basement’ which was straight out of a horror film. My work has been shown in various London galleries as well as being a regular artist at the Biscuit Factory in Newcastle upon Tyne.

In the last few years, I’ve been making with paper porcelain and been using stoneware glazes. All my work is made using slab building techniques. I’ve been taking inspiration from European ceramics with the use of stands and depiction of scenes but still keeping with my folk-art aesthetic, which has always been at the heart of my creations.

Themes have also got more complicated for my creatures as it has for all of us in recent years. You may notice an underlying sense of peril but with a healthy dose of punk rock to my recent work.
