Ella Guru

“I paint primarily in traditional oil on canvas, taking inspiration from painters like Caravaggio and Velasquez.  Originally from Columbus, Ohio, USA, I lived in London for 23 years before moving to the Sussex Coast.

My subject matter ranges from bar scenes to Greek myths to slightly strange family and pet portraits. Much of my work was based on performers and audiences in nightclubs in London, Amsterdam and Berlin, but after 10 years in Hastings, nature has gradually crept in, and I am now painting more tress, beaches and sea.

I was a founding member of the Stuckist Art Movement in 1999. I agreed with their ideas that painting is the most direct and sincere way of expressing emotion and the current world around us. Stuckist exhibitions included the Walker Gallery in Liverpool. I still paint commissions for clients that I met through the group.”
