drawn to the beat

Step back in time and into a world of creativity with Drawn to the Beat, an extraordinary art installation that fuses music and imagination located at the Hastings Museum & Art Gallery. At its heart stands a giant cassette tape structure—a playful nod to retro nostalgia. But this isn’t just any cassette! Inside, a working spool of paper replaces the tape, ready to capture and display the community artistic spirit.

Peer through the magnifying viewing port at the top of the cassette to watch the designs roll by, transforming the music into a visual symphony

Add your own designs to the extra spool, which will be placed into the cassette for future viewing. Why not listen to some music while you do it and let the notes guide your work.

Concept by Curious Agenda, Build by Simon Turner, Cassette paintwork by Carol Cook of W.ave Arts, Spool creation and community workshop by Radiator Arts.

This imaginative installation was brought to life by Radiator Arts, a beloved local arts renowned for their community-driven projects for over 20 years. In the lead-up to the launch, Radiator Arts hosted a free workshop at the Hastings Contemporary, inviting members of the public to contribute their designs and become part of this collective work of art.

Music was played in the room to guide participants as they sketched, doodled, or designed directly onto the specially designed cassette spool.
